Betsy DeVos Continues Her Passionate Work for Education Reform
Betsy DeVos served proudly as the 11th United Stated Education Secretary, with her passion for education reform beginning long before she held a government office. During her days at Calvin College, she first became interested and passionate about politics with a special focus on the education sector. As a Republican, she has spearheaded multiple campaigns for office in her home state of Michigan, including her husband’s campaign for chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and his nomination to be the governor of Michigan in 2006.
Betsy DeVos is best known for her demure nature in the public eye, always appearing with grace and an elegant demeanor. Yet, those who have known her in political situations know that she is not one to back down from a fight. Mrs. DeVos’s political allies know her as tough and always one to stand her ground for a cause that she believes in. She is an avid fighter when it comes to advocating for something that can help the education system in America, such as the legislature to allow parents to have a broader range of choices to schools. This is known as the school voucher program and it gives students, many in low-income areas, access to private schools throughout the country.
Mrs. Betsy DeVos and her husband Dick DeVos are also very passionate about non-profit and philanthropic causes. The couple’s goal is to seek out and implement real-life solutions for some of the country’s biggest social issues. The couple formed the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, where they seek to give back to families that are truly in need and may not have anywhere else to turn. She also serves on boards that include the DeVos Institute for Arts Management at the Kennedy Center, Kids Hope USA, and the American Federation for Children.
